Jason Kersner
Jason grew up in Rockville, Maryland playing his youth hockey with the Washington Junior Capitals, Washington Little Capitals and Tri-City Eagles. Jason has been coaching at the highest level in the area for the past nine years. Prior to taking over Team Maryland’s (TM) Midget Program in 2006, he has held the head coaching position for the Washington Little Capitals (WLC) Bantam Minor, Major and Midget U16 Teams, as well as been an assistant coach for the WLC Midget Minor and Major teams.
Since taking over the TM Midget program he has quickly built it into a nationally recognized and respected program. Two years ago his U16 team was nationally ranked all season, advanced to USA Hockey Nationals and won three tournaments, including the prestigious 2007 Shattuck St. Mary’s Invitational. Currently, this year’s U18 team has a record of 39-18-2 and has again won three tournaments (AHR Challenge Cup in Dallas, Hampton Roads Junior Showcase, and the Boston Junior Rangers Holiday Invitational). Over 40 of Jason’s players have gone directly from his teams to playing at the next level, whether that is Prep School or Junior A, and many of them have continued on to play NCAA Division I/III and pro hockey. This season’s U18 team featured players receiving scholarship offers from numerous Hockey East (NCAA Division I) schools, and one player (Nick Sorkin) committing to the University of New Hampshire. Graduating players from this year’s team will be drafted into the USHL and NAHL, and a few more will play next season in the EJHL. The rest of the players will return next season to continue their development on route to the next level. Due to Jason’s wide range of networks, his teams/players have been and will continue to be afforded great opportunities (such as acceptance into the nation’s top tournaments, attending in-season practices with EJHL and NAHL teams, participation in the best showcase events such as the Spring Beantown Classic, and tours of both Division I and III college hockey programs).
The Midget program is now nationally recognized as one of most professionally run Midget programs in the country and some of its features include: 3 practices per week, weekly team and individual video meetings, professionally run strength and conditioning program, billet program for out-of-town players, and a full-time coaching staff that works to develop and advance its players). Jason spends his summer working for Hockey Dynamics Inc., regularly attends leading coaching seminars, and working with USA Hockey’s Player Development Program. He currently holds a USA Hockey Level IV Coaching certification, and will obtain his masters, Level V, this summer.
