Team Maryland finished off their season on a high note as they finished 3rd in the nation at the Tier 1 U18 level.


Team Maryland finished off their season on a high note as they finished 3rd in the nation at the Tier 1 U18 level.  Team Maryland was led by goaltender, Tyler Kapp, who took Team Maryland all the way to the Semi-Final match up against the 2010 National Champions, the Chicago Mission.

Team Maryland did not open up the National tournament on a strong note, as they lost their opening round game to Russell Stover of the Mid-West Elite League, 4-0. Despite the setback, Team Maryland came back the next day to easily defeat the Alaska All Stars 3-0.

Game three was do or die for Team Maryland and their opponents, the Colorado Thunderbirds of the Mid-West Elite League. The game was tied 1-1 after two periods of action. In the third period, Josh Bretner scored the game-winning goal on a power play with an assist from Jake Lynes. This victory gave Team Maryland a birth into the USA Hockey National Championships quarterfinal round.

In the quarterfinals, Team Maryland faced off against the Boston Jr. Bruins, which were 3-0 in round robin play. Team Maryland stood strong behind their goalie, Tyler Kapp, and Lennie Childs broke the ice for Team Maryland with a goal at 5:02 in the first period. The game-winning goal came from Defenseman Eric Sade with Josh Bretner and Jake Lynes assisting. Team Maryland then went on to score three goals in the third period to defeat the Boston Jr. Bruins 5-2.

Team Maryland advanced to the semi-finals four hours later against the 4 and 0 Chicago Mission. Team Maryland trailed Chicago by one after two periods of play in regulation. In the third period, Chicago scored at 13:23, but Team Maryland scored quickly with an end-to-end rush by defenseman Mike Chen.  Chicago then scored with 5:20 left in the third period to secure the game and a birth in the National Championship game.

In the National Championship finals, the Chicago Mission defeated the Philadelphia Jr. Flyers 7-1.

Team Maryland is the first southeast team to ever reach the semi-finals at the Tier 1 U18 level. This achievement was due primarily to the hard work of both the players and the coaching staff. Team Maryland considers player development and placement as its top priority. Team Maryland has been successful in placing their players onto the next level. To date, Team Maryland has placed the following players onto teams for the 2010-2011 season. Forward and Captain Lennie Childs will be playing for the Janesville Jets (NAHL); Maxim Gaudreault has signed a tender with the Motor City Machine (NAHL); Jake Lynes to the Topeka Roadrunners (NAHL); Mike Williams to the Springfield Jr. Blues (NAHL); Alec Austin will suit up for the Wellington Dukes (OPJHL); Mark Cisar will play for the Rochester Stars (EJHL);and Casey Thrush, who has committed to the University of New Hampshire (HE), as well as being ranked number 89 by NHL Central Scouting’s final rankings for the 2010 NHL Draft. Team Maryland also anticipates other players to sign with Jr. A programs and Division 1 colleges in the near future.
